Rumor: Racing Club interested in Gustavo Bou

Could the Argentine striker make a return to Racing this offseason?

Just days after a heartbreaking loss to River Plate that ended their 2022 Argentine Primera División championship hopes, Racing Club is looking to form their foundation for next year.

According to Nando Maderna of Racing de Alma, Racing has its eyes set on former Racing and current New England Revolution striker Gustavo Bou. Bou joined Racing as a free agent back in August 2014. Through 105 appearances with Racing, Gustavo Bou notched an impressive forty-four goals and nineteen assists.

Gustavo Bou’s addition on July 10th, 2019 was one of the first big moves Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena made upon his arrival in New England. Over his three and a half seasons with New England, Bou has appeared in ninety-one contests across all competitions, where he notched forty goals and fourteen assists over 7,265 minutes.

While there have been many ups during Gustavo Bou’s time in New England, they didn’t come without downs. The biggest being a history of injuries. Most notably, a leg injury in July kept the Argentine striker out of action for over a month.

According to Maderna, Bou has made his wishes of dawning a Racing kit again known. If you follow Bou on social media, you know the Argentine does not hide his support of his former club as he wears various articles of clothing featuring the Racing logo.

Sources close to Maderna say, “They (Racing) are going to look for it and they are going to try, but it’s not easy.”

At the tail end of their historic 2021 regular-season campaign, Bou inked a multi-year extension that keeps the Argentine striker in New England through the 2023 MLS season.

After a rocky 2022 campaign that saw Bou out with injury and only notch one goal and one assist in his final eight appearances, finding an exit for Bou may be on the table for the Revolution. Considering Racing’s interest in Bou and Bou’s alleged desire to return, Bruce Arena may show his willingness to do right by the players as the club may look at off-loading the soon-to-be 33-year-old.
