After being awarded the Golden Glove, Matt Turner has to be considered the No.1 goalkeeper for the USMNT.

Sunday was an amazing moment for United States Men’s National Team fans.

The United States were crowned champions of the 2021 Gold Cup after a late header in the 117th minute from Miles Robinson secured the victory for the stars and stripes.

After all the recent struggles that the USMNT had including the tremendous disappointment that was missing the 2018 World Cup. Right now, the United States are the king of CONCACAF.

Especially for Revolution fans, the tournament was all about Matt Turner. He was dominant in net and appears to have made his case for being the United States goalkeeper this World Cup cycle.

In six starts, Turner had five shutouts and only allowed one goal in the entire tournament. He was rightfully named the best goalkeeper of the tournament. This is just an extension of the New England Revolution goalkeeper’s impressive USMNT resume.

In seven career starts, Turner boasts a 7-0-0 record with six clean sheets and a goals against average of 0.14. It’s hard to get much better than that.

When you combine Turner’s dominant performance in both MLS and international play, it’s hard to say that he shouldn’t be the starter. The New England Revolution goalkeeper gets consistent playing time compared to Zack Steffen who barely plays for Man City. Also when it comes to stopping shots, no one is better than Turner.

Critics will say that Turner needs to be better with the ball at his feet, but compared to Steffen, there isn’t really a drop off. Also over the years he has improved at his ball distribution.

Heading into World Cup qualifying, there is no reason why Matt Turner shouldn’t be on the roster. He has shown that he is up for the challenge and ready to lead the United States to glory.
