Bruce Arena offers no update on Carles Gil

MLS: New England Revolution at Atlanta United FC

After our own Seth Macomber reported that Carles Gil would be out for 3-plus weeks, fans are still left clueless as to how long New England will be without their captain due to lack of comments from the club.

There was a noticeable absence on Wednesday night for the New England Revolution.

Carles Gil missed his first game this season leaving a major hole in New England’s midfield. Tajon Buchanan took his place in the No.10 role as the Revs drew with Nashville SC in the midweek matchup.

The captain’s absence comes on the heels of our own Seth Macomber reporting that Gil would be out for 3-plus weeks.

After the draw Bruce Arena was asked (by myself) if Seth’s report was true and the Head Coach and Sporting Director didn’t shed any light on the midfielder’s status.

Arena said, “I have no updates on that now. We’ll know more later in the week.”

Without Gil the Revs weren’t as clinical in the final third as well as in set-pieces. It’s impossible to replace a player who is an MVP favorite, but Arena said that the team didn’t do themselves any favors.

The head coach said, “No, we had no problem knowing where to place people. It was fine. Obviously, we don’t have any players that can replace Carles for what he does. But I think on the night the whole group just wasn’t very good.”

Andrew Farrell and Gil have had a great relationship since the Spaniard joined the club. After the matchup the center back said that he had spoken to Gil and while Farrell said that Gil is doing well, he is obviously unhappy to be injured.

Farrell said, “Yeah, I think he’s doing fine. Obviously, not happy that he’s injured. He loves to play, he loves to be here and being on the field, but he’ll be back as soon as possible. Hopefully, he can recover quick.”

New England will be without Gil again on Sunday as they face the Philadelphia Union at Gillette Stadium.
