Report: Red Sox to Send Kristian Campbell to Triple-A After Rough Stretch

June 20, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Boston Red Sox are sending rookie utility man Kristian Campbell to Triple-A Worcester, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. The club has yet to announce any corresponding moves. Campbell’s demotion comes on the back of a brutal two-month stretch that saw him hit .159 in May and June.

The Boston Red Sox are sending infielder Kristian Campbell to Triple-A, sources tell ESPN. Campbell, who signed an eight-year, $60 million contract this spring, was hitting .301/.407/.495 at the end of April but is .159/.243/.222 since. He’ll get a chance to reset in Worcester.

Report: Kristian Campbell Sent to Triple-A Worcester

Campbell, 22, entered the 2025 season as Boston’s No. 2 prospect and the No. 7 overall prospect in baseball. A second baseman in the minors, Campbell won MLB Pipeline’s Hitting Prospect of the Year and Double-A’s Eastern League MVP in 2024. Coming out of spring training, Campbell was the only one of the Red Sox’s “big three” prospects to make the big league roster.

After a blistering start to the season, Campbell earned himself an eight-year contract extension worth $60 million shortly after Opening Day. He finished April with a slash line of .301/.407/.495 and looked well on his way to being one of the top contenders for American League Rookie of the Year.

Since the beginning of May, Campbell has gone cold, hitting .154/.236/.215, striking out at a 29.2% clip. He has also had a rough time defensively, accumulating -14 DRS and -8 OAA at second base. The Red Sox have also given him reps in the outfield and had him begin working on playing first base after Triston Casas went to the injured list, but never gave him any game time at the position.

The Last Word

Despite the hot start and big contract, Campbell will be sent back to Triple-A to try and work his way out of his current slump. The Red Sox are currently fourth in the AL East with a 39-37 record, and are tied for the final AL Wild Card spot. Despite being in a playoff spot, the club opted to trade their franchise cornerstone, Rafael Devers, to the San Francisco Giants, getting no big league bats in return. With only 204 professional games under his belt, this demotion may help Campbell work back to the above-average utility man the Red Sox believe he can be.
