According to Katie Morrison-O’Day, Red Sox #3 prospect IF Marcelo Mayer was congratulated by his AAA Worcester teammates. He has left the clubhouse for Fenway Park as we speak! As confirmed by Jeff Passan, the Red Sox are officially calling him up to Boston.

The Boston Red Sox are calling up infielder Marcelo Mayer, one of the top prospects in baseball, sources tell ESPN. With Alex Bregman injured, Boston needs infield help, and the 22-year-old Mayer — who’s hitting .271/.347/.471 at Triple-A — will get the first shot at his ABs.

With Alex Bregman suffering an issue with his right quad, the Red Sox took almost no time at all. The 22-year-old infielder has been waiting to be called up since the beginning of the season. Now with Roman Anthony in the mix as well, this next month could be a boost for that Red Sox lineup this season. Barring the update on Bregman’s MRI of his right quad, it’s considered day-to-day for now.
Marcelo Mayer is Getting The Call to The Big Leagues
As for Mayer, he’s been batting .271, while leading the minors with 43 RBIs and slugging 9 HRs in AAA. There were initial reports about him not being in the lineup for Game 1 in Worcester, as they were also playing a doubleheader. According to Tom Carron on NESN, he stated that the manager, Chad Tracy, pulled him aside. He said that he doesn’t think he should start Game 2 when they needed him in Boston for Game 2. Mayer was congratulated in the clubhouse and is now driving down I-90 to Boston.
There is the most suspicion that he will be starting at second base, but where will Cora rotate the roster? Where will Marcelo Mayer be placed in the lineup? Will he be batting down low in the inning, or will he be batting in the middle of the order? Possibly second? Regardless of the situation, it’s a great problem to have for the Red Sox. With Mayer now up, the Red Sox can fully evaluate where they are with him as he makes his debut on Boston’s roster. Replacing Alex Bregman will be no easy task for the rookie prospect.
