Red Sox Starter Brayan Bello Confirmed Out for Start of Season

March 12, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Brayan Bello will be out to begin the 2025 season with a shoulder injury.

Sean McAdam of MassLive reports that Red Sox starter Brayan Bello will be out for the start of the regular season due to shoulder soreness. He’ll be joining Kutter Crawford on the injured list. Crawford is on the IL with soreness in his left knee, and hasn’t returned since. There’s no timeline for his return, but Bello’s expected to return in as soon as early April. Manager Alex Cora has stated there’s no reason to “push him,” as he’ll be working on getting his arm strength back to speed.

Brayan Bello Out for Start of Season

Bello is coming off a tough 2024 season in which he posted a 4.49 ERA. With Andrew Bailey as their new pitching coach, he was expected to improve that year. Unfortunately, he didn’t live up to it like his teammates Tanner Houck and Crawford did. He continued practicing with Red Sox Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez in the offseason in hopes of getting the kinks out. With the acquisitions of Walker Buehler and Garrett Crochet, he won’t have the burden of trying to carry the rotation. He’ll fit in nicely as their #3 or #4 starter when he returns. Along with adding to the offense by signing Alex Bregman, their pitching will hopefully get some run support, especially with that heavy top five in that lineup.

Will Bello do well this season? Maybe this break from pitching will give him extra time to work everything out. There are serious questions for what Bello can do this season, but he won’t be doing it alone. Crochet looks dominant this spring, and Buehler is doing great as well. Tanner Houck’s only had one start this spring training, but hopefully, he’ll get out of his funk soon. The Red Sox have endless pitching depth, like Richard Fitts, Lucas Giolito, and the returning Garrett Whitlock. This means Bello’s absence won’t be felt too much. We’ll see how things turn out for the Red Sox pitching staff.
