Red Sox Speedster On Historic Triples Pace

June 11, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Entering the 2024 season, Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran had played in just under 200 career games. He showed flashes but hadn’t solidified himself as a consistent player. And in those first three MLB campaigns, Duran hit seven triples. It’s all been a different story in 2024. Duran hasn’t just matched his previous numbers. He is absolutely blowing everything out of the water. Jarren Duran is on a historic triples pace this season, putting him in fantastic company.

Jarren Duran On Historic Triples Pace

In just 66 games this season, Jarren Duran has 10 triples. That’s three more than the next closest player in Bobby Witt Jr. Only five MLB hitters have five or more three-baggers. Duran is well above all of them. Through this many games, no one has had 10 triples since 2011, when José Reyes did it. It has been 12 years since a hitter has done what Jarren Duran is currently doing. It’s extremely impressive but far from the full eye-opening story.

Let’s start with Red Sox history. Boston players regularly hit 14 or more triples in the early 1900s, but that isn’t the case anymore. Since 1941, Jim Rice is the only Red Sox player to hit 15 triples in a season (1977 and 1978). In the 21st century, just four players have more than 10. Jarren Duran, in under 70 games, has already joined Jacoby Ellsbury, Nomar Garciaparra, and Johnny Damon. If Duran hits four more triples, he takes the cake.

Jarren Duran leads MLB with 10 triples.

No other player has more than 7.

Most recent Red Sox with 10+ triples in a season:

Jarren Duran 10 (2024)
Jacoby Ellsbury 10 (2009)
Nomar Garciaparra 13 (2003)
Johnny Damon 11 (2002)

Since 2000, Curtis Granderson leads all MLB players with 23 triples in a season, which he did in 2007. Granderson played 158 games that campaign. If Duran keeps his current pace and durability, he is on track to play all 162 contests and hit more triples than Granderson. Obviously, things can change, but Duran is making his case already for one of the greatest triple seasons in recent memory.

If that doesn’t impress you enough, then this sure will. Jarren Duran, as previously mentioned, has 10 triples in 2024. That’s more than 16 MLB teams this season. Yes, you read that right. Jarren Duran has more triples than half of Major League Baseball organizations this year. And two franchises, the Diamondbacks and Rangers, are tied with Duran at 10. As of Sunday, the Red Sox are tied atop the league with 19 total triples. Duran accounts for more than half of those.

Jarren Duran’s Season Thus Far

Jarren Duran’s triple numbers are extremely impressive. When you couple them with his other statistics, it’s even better. Duran is the first player in nearly 100 years to start a season the way he has. When considering his triples, doubles, stolen bases, and homers, Jarren Duran did something that no one has since 1930.

Jarren Duran is the first player in 94 years to have at least 10 3B, 15 2B, 10 SB, and 5 HR through his first 66 games of a season. The last player to do so was Kiki Cuyler in 1930.

As of June 10, Duran ranks ninth in MLB Wins Above Replacement. He sits eighth among hitters, barely behind players like Juan Soto, Mookie Betts, and Kyle Tucker. He is ahead of Shohei Ohtani, Marcus Semien, Bryce Harper, and Freddie Freeman. This season, Jarren Duran has been the definition of an impact player.

It’s been a total breakout year for Boston’s everyday outfielder. He’s on pace to smash all of his career-high numbers. There are still almost 100 games remaining this year, and a lot can happen. But if Duran even comes close to producing the way he is, 2024 will be a special year for the 27-year-old.
