Red Sox Slugger Makes Team History

May 21, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Rafael Devers just made Red Sox history. Yes, you read that right. In the 123-year history of the ballclub, no Boston hitter has achieved the slugger’s recent feat.

Red Sox Slugger Makes Team History

In the fourth inning of Boston’s 5-0 win over the Rays, Devers smoked a ball to left field for a home run. It was his sixth consecutive game with a bomb, a club record. The homer broke a seven-way tie, with Devers passing Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams, and José Canseco, among others.

The third baseman grounded out to pitcher Taj Bradley in his first at-bat in the second inning. Devers saw just two pitches in his second plate appearance. His blast went 382 feet, putting the Red Sox up 3-0. Devers had just four homers in his first 31 games of the season. Six matchups later, the slugger now has 10 bombs.

Here’s the complete list for, as of May 20, the most consecutive games with a home run in Red Sox history:

Rafael Devers, 2024 – 6

Bobby Dalbec, 2020 – 5

José Canseco, 1995 – 5

George Scott, 1977 – 5

Dick Stuart, 1963 – 5

Ted Williams, 1957 – 5

Jimmie Foxx, 1940 – 5

How Devers Stacks Up

Devers’ homer streak isn’t just impressive in terms of Red Sox history. It’s a rare feat in all of baseball. The MLB record for most consecutive games with a bomb is eight, which was set by three different players: Dale Long (1956), Don Mattingly (1987), and Ken Griffey Jr. (1993).

Just six players historically have hit one in seven straight contests. That group includes Mike Trout (2022), Joey Votto (2021), and Barry Bonds (2004). In total, only nine players rank ahead of Devers.

Rafael Devers is now two games away from tying Ken Griffey Jr., Don Mattingly, and Dale Long for the most consecutive games with a home run (8) 🤯

He would tie 6 others with his 7-straight if he goes yard tomorrow vs Tampa Bay. https://t.co/4alpqdPtKy

Devers Keeps On Hitting

Devers’ record-breaking week comes in the midst of a strong stretch for the Dominican Republic native. The corner infielder has raised his batting average from under .190 to over .280 in under a month.

Devers missed a set of games on three separate occasions in April due to injury. Since returning from an absence stemming from a shoulder injury, Raffy is slashing .288/.356/.652 in the month of May, leaving his OPS at over 1.000.

He looks to make it seven matchups in a row when Boston faces Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. But regardless of whether he extends his streak, Rafael Devers has already made Red Sox history.
