A look at the four-game series in Fenway against the Yankees and then look ahead to the Blue Jays series.

Welcome back to another episode of the Red Sox Pre-Cap Podcast, your spot to hear a recap of the latest series on the docket for the Red Sox as well as a preview of what’s coming down the pipeline. Today, we talk about Boston’s latest series at Fenway against the New York Yankees, and then look ahead to the series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Red Sox received some starting pitching reinforcements, as Tanner Houck made his return to the rotation for the start of this series. He looked great as he struck out eight Yankees in his 4 2⁄3 innings of work. The bullpen for both teams struggled, however, as Adam Ottavino and Chad Green gave up two runs apiece and the game went into extra innings. The offense was able to pull it out against Lucas Luetge and the first game was Boston’s.

The second game was crazy from the start. It was supposed to be a matchup against Garrett Cole and Eduardo Rodriguez, but the latter had to leave the game with nobody out in the second after suffering some migraine symptoms. Things looked dire, but Phillips Valdez arrived to save the day. Valdez, who had just been called back up prior to that game, threw three innings of one-hit ball while striking out seven Yankees! On the offensive side of the ball, it was all Rafael Devers as he hit two bombs and drove in five runs.

The third and fourth games of the series eerily mirrored each other. Nathan Eovaldi for the Red Sox on Saturday, and Domingo Germán for the Yankees on Sunday, were absolutely lights out. In fact, the latter had a no-hit bid going into the seventh inning. But, once the dominant starters exited the game, the bullpens blew it. In Saturday’s game, Ottavino was dinked and dunked and the Yankees were able to grab the lead. In Sunday’s game, the Red Sox were able to get to Jonathan Loasiga and picked up five runs in in just a half-inning, and a half-inning they with a no-hitter still in play!

Overall, the Red Sox were able to take three out of four games against the Yankees and move on to the Toronto Blue Jays for another four-game set this time in Toronto. Don’t forget to subscribe to the Over The Monster Podcast Network so you never miss an episode.
