The slugger gets his chance to bounce back from his first stint in the bigs.
Danny Santana has gone through a little bit of a bad luck stretch in terms of health, continuing on Wednesday against Buffalo. Just three days after being activated from the injured list with a quad injury, the utility man went down in the outfield with another muscle injury. He was removed from the game, and now it we’ve learned it’s bad enough that he’ll need to go right back to the injured list.
Santana to the IL. Corresponding roster move to come.

Chris Cotillo is reporting Franchy Cordero will be the corresponding move.
Cora says corresponding move coming later.
It’s Franchy Cordero, who is en route to join the Red Sox, per source. https://t.co/IZ8JsNdMj9

Santana has, by and large, not been much of a contributor to the Red Sox since coming up and joining the big-league squad in late May. Overall, he’s gotten 113 plate appearances for Boston, and while he’s been able to fill in all around the diamond, he’s not doing much with the bat in his hands. He’s hitting .171/.230/.324, good (bad?) for a 48 OPS+. That said, he did have a double and a home run on Monday, so maybe there was a hot streak coming. If so, he’ll have to wait again for at least ten days.
The more exciting part of the news here is that Franchy Cordero is coming back up to the majors. Part of the return for Andrew Benintendi, Cordero struggled mightily in his initial stint in the majors this year, hitting .179/.228/.274 for a 35 OPS+ over 102 plate appearances. That got him a demotion to Triple-A Worcester, where he immediately found his stride again. Upon getting to the minors, he hit .385/.468/.661 through June, leading to some wondering what he’d have to do to get back to the bigs. Part of the strategy was giving him some time at first base. Cordero has slowed down a bit of late, hitting .224/.297/.328 in July so far in July, but the raw talent and the hot streak he got on first getting to Worcester lead to some optimism that he can at least outproduce Santana.
