Plus, Lucas Giolito looks solid in his big league return.
Exactly how good is Kristian Campbell? Through one month of the 2025 season, he’s made a case to be called the best second baseman in the game, as he currently leads the position in OBP while coming in second in slugging and third in batting average. Rookies aren’t supposed to be this good this quickly, but Campbell’s approach at the plate is exceedingly mature. (Alex Speier, Boston Globe)
Red Sox manager Alex Cora thinks his youth and general ignorance about how the game works at the big league level actually benefits Campbell. (Chris Mason, MassLive)
While Cora gives Campbell an A+ on the season so far (duh), his right-side infield partner, Triston Casas, hasn’t been nearly as effective. But Craig Breslow sees some positive trends in Casas’s recent play and is encouraging patience. (Jason Ounpraseuth, NESN)
Alex Bregman, like Campbell, probably deserves at least an A on the season, too. That’s unusual for Bregman, who is typically a slow starter. (Ian Browne, MLB.com)
Lucas Giolito, obviously, would receive an incomplete, and he’s got plenty of make-up work to do before receiving a letter grade. But last night he got off to a great start by dominating the Blue Jays for the first five innings of the game. And even though it ended as one of the worst losses of the season, his performance was a great thing to see. (Rob Bradford, WEEI)
And despite the loss, Giolito feels plenty confident going forward. (Gio Rivera, NESN)
