News and notes from around Red Sox Nation.
The Red Sox still haven’t sorted out the first base position for 2025, but does that mean it’s too early to start worrying about the third base position for 2026? Alex Bregman is playing at an All-Star level, which, of course, increases the likelihood that he opts out of the extremely player-friendly deal the Sox signed him to over the winter. Bregman’s agent Scott Boras recently discussed just that, along with the possibility that Bregman would consider signing a restructured extension that would keep him off the market this offseason. (Alex Speier, Boston Globe)
But that discussion is for another day. Right now, the Sox need to act to solve some of the issues that are keeping the 2025 team mired in mediocrity: the holes at shortstop and first base, and the paths to promotion for Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer. (Peter Abraham, Boston Globe)
Moving Kristian Campbell to first could be one way to plug those holes while making room for Mayer, but Alex Cora isn’t in the mood to rush anything. (Conor Ryan, Boston.com)
After a hot start to the season, it looked certain that Campbell would put together a strong Rookie of the Year campaign. He still has plenty of time to recover from this prolonged slump that’s put a serious dent in his overall numbers, but he’s definitely fallen off the pace set by Jacob Wilson of the A’s. (Jason Foster, MLB.com)
The Mets certainly don’t have a hole at shortstop — Francisco Lindor is one of the best infielders of his generation. But Sox reliever Justin Wilson got the better of him during a crucial at-bat last night. (Christopher Smith, MassLive)
Lindor’s star doesn’t shine quite as brightly as that of his teammate, Juan Soto. But after hitting a Fenway single off the monster last night, Mets management isn’t too happy with him. (Boston.com)
