News and notes from around Red Sox Nation.
For the second year in a row the Red Sox will send three players to the MLB All-Star Game, with Garrett Crochet, Alex Bregman, and Aroldis Chapman all earning nods. Looking over those names, you may notice that none of them were on the team last year, and that each of them were acquired via an investment of either money or prospect capital (substantial investments with respect to Crochet and Bregman). That’s just a nice little reminder that, as John Henry would say, good baseball players aren’t cheap. (Tim Healey, Boston Globe)
So Craig Breslow has proven he can find talent in the offseason. Can he now show that he can use the trade deadline to push the team into October? (Steve Buckley, The Athletic)
This will be the second ASG in a row for Garrett Crochet. But after making last year’s team as the sole representative of one of the worst MLB teams of all time, Crochet thinks this year’s selection means more. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)
While Crochet is locked up long-term, Bregman and Chapman are not, leading to speculation that they could be dealt at the deadline if the Sox aren’t in the postseason picture. If Chapman does end up elsewhere, Jordan Hicks could be the new ninth inning man. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)
Ceddanne Rafaela, like Crochet, is locked up long-term. He didn’t make the All-Star team, but the fact that he can be discussed as an arguable snub is remarkable given how he hit last year and began the 2025 season. (Rob Bradford, WEEI)
Speaking of snubs, Rafael Devers didn’t make the cut, either, and is one of the biggest names who didn’t. (Chad Jennings, The Athletic)
It’s way too early to tell weather James Tibbs, acquired from the Giants in the Devers trade, will ever be an All-Star, but he is one of the Red Sox top-10 prospects according to Baseball America, which just published it’s midseason updated lists. (Baseball America)
