News and notes from around Red Sox Nation.
The Red Sox’ ten-game win streak (RIP) did more than just vault the team up the standings — it also definitively answered the question of whether Craig Breslow should buy at the rapidly approaching trade deadline in the affirmative. Breslow himself reinforced that notion, noting that they were aggressive in the offseason in their attempts to win in 2025 and will look to improve the team in the coming days. (Lauren Campbell, MassLive)
Unfortunately, though, Breslow has already lost out on one target. Breslow, along with representatives from eight other teams, scouted reliever David Robertson in person recently and “made a strong run” at the pitcher. But Robertson ended up re-signing with one of his former teams, the Phillies. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)
Is the Robertson deal a harbinger of just how hard it’s going to be to buy this year? Under MLB’s new postseason format — which I hate with an undying passion — it’s really hard to ever truly be out of the postseason race. There may be 20 teams looking to buy at this deadline, which may increase the importance of acting early. (Peter Abraham, Boston Globe)
If you’re looking to keep track of which teams might buy versus sell, here’s a handy little guide. As of now, only eight teams are listed as potential sellers. (Jim Bowden, The Athletic)
And remember: for as good as things feel with the Sox right now, this team has actually compiled an identical record through 100 games as the 2024 and 2023 teams did. So what lessons can we take from the last two seasons? (Rob Bradford, WEEI)
Finally, something cool. On Tuesday night, ESPN will broadcast SportsCenter live from Chatham in the run-up to a Cape Cod Baseball League matchup between the Chatham Anglers and the Wareham Gatemen. I… wasn’t even sure that SportsCenter was still a thing. But as the owner of a Wareham Gateman hat (which is now a lot less cool than it was when I bought it since the WooSox started using essentially the same logo) I’ll be tuning in.
