Red Sox Minor Lines: Yairo Muñoz extends his streak to 28

August 7, 2021 by Over the Monster Leave a Comment

And Miguel Bleis has a big day in the DSL.

Worcester W 4-3 (F/11)

Yairo Muñoz, SS: 2-6, 1 R, 1 RBI

Delino DeShields Jr., CF: 2-5, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 CS

Joey Meneses, 1B: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K

Josh Ockimey, DH: 2-6, 1 R, 2 K

Jeremy Rivera, LF: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI

Kyle Hart (SP): 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K (27 pitches)

John Schreiber: 4 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K (74 pitches)

Marcus Walden (BS): 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K (47 pitches)

Jose Adames (BS; W): 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K (23 pitches)

Well, we have to start every Worcester write up these days with a Muñoz update. The utility man, who really should be pushing for a spot in the majors at this point, grabbed two more hits to extend his hit streak to 28 games. The Red Sox need new juju. A guy with a franchise record hit streak seems like new juju, but what do I know? Schreiber was really the MVP of this game, though. He’s been under the radar this year, but he should also maybe get some consideration for a call up at some point. His 3.38 ERA is more good than great, but he’s a reliever who has been thrown into starts and long relief. He shouldn’t be starting games, but being able to go a couple innings at a time only adds value. Overall he has 46 strikeouts and 18 walks in 48 innings. It should be noted that he did get time in the bigs last year, and struggled with Detroit to the tune of a 6.32 ERA.

Portland L 0-8

Pedro Castellanos, RF: 0-2, 1 CS

Devling Granberg, 1B: 0-3, 2 K

Tyreque Reed, DH: 0-3, 2 K

Hudson Potts, 3B: 0-3, 2 K

Kole Cottam, C: 1-3, 1 K

Jeisson Rosario, CF: 0-3, 2 K

Andrew Politi (SP; L): 3.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 BB, 4 K (66 pitches)

Zach Schellenger: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K (29 pitches)

So this one is a yikes. There’s really not much you can say about this kind of game, where Portland managed just one single on the evening. They also struck out 13 times and didn’t walk. The pitching wasn’t much better either, with Politi really having a tough season, now sitting with a 6.29 ERA. Let’s never talk about this one again.

Greenville W 4-3

Christian Koss, SS: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K

Cameron Cannon, 2B: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 1 SB

Tyler Dearden, LF: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K

Brandon Howlett, DH: 2-4, 1 K

Joe Davis, 1B: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI

Jaxx Groshans, C: 1-4, 2 K

Stephen Scott, RF: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI, 3 K

Chase Shugart (SP; W): 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K (78 pitches)

Joe Davis has been one of the most fun players to follow in the system this year. He’s not the best, nor the biggest breakout, but he’s a late-round draftee and a big guy, and who doesn’t love rooting for big guys, ya know? This game upped his OPS on the season, which started in Salem, to .980, and he’s actually been better since his promotion to Greenville. This was his third homer in five games this month. Meanwhile, Shugart also had a nice day, and he’s had a weird season. His 5.43 ERA is not great, but it’s really due to three terrible outings. Granted, you can’t just toss aside a pitcher’s worst games, but it’s worth mentioned he’s allowed two or fewer runs in 10 of his 15 starts this year. Like I said, strange season.

Salem L 4-8

Nick Yorke, DH: 1-2, 2 BB, 2 R, 1 RBI

Gilberto Jimenez, LF: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K

Matthew Lugo, SS: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 1 K

Ceddanne Rafaela, CF: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 RBI

Nick Decker, RF: 0-4

Nicholas Northcut, 1B: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 R, 1 K

Antoni Flores, 3B: 2-4, 1 K

Jorge Rodriguez (SP; L): 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K (79 pitches)

There wasn’t a whole lot of good news in this loss for Salem, but Yorke’s performance at the top of the lineup certainly qualified. He’s been hot for a while now, but his last few games have been particularly eye-opening. After this game with three trips on the bases, his OBP in three August games is .550, and that comes after posting a .448 OBP in the month of July. The power isn’t fully developed, but we’re seeing the on-base ability that the Red Sox liked so much when they made him a surprise first rounder in 2020.

FCL SUSP

DSL Red G1 W 5-3

Miguel Bleis, CF: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

Enderso Lira, C: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 1 E

Luis Ravelo, SS: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 R

Cesar Ruiz (SP): 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

DSL Red G2 W 6-0 (F/6)

Albertson Asigen, CF: 2-3, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

Jose Ramirez (SP): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K

DSL Blue L 5-7

Juan Chacon, CF: 2-4, 2 R

Armando Sierra, LF: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K

Jedixon Paez (SP): 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K

This was a nice day down at the DSL for a couple of the top prospects at the level in Bleis and Chacon. The latter has had a couple of flashes this year but is still really looking to go on a run. He was the top singing a couple of years ago, getting a $900,000 bonus, and is up to a solid, if unspectacular, .742 OPS. Bleis, meanwhile, got the highest bonus in the most recent class, getting a $1.5 million bonus, and he’s starting to get hot after a late start to his season. This was his first homer and double of the season, and his OPS jumped to 1.038 on the season.
