MLB Network Insider Reveals Hidden Gem in Starting Pitching Market

November 5, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

As the MLB Hot Stove season heats up and teams strategize for the upcoming year, it’s not uncommon for unexpected players to capture the spotlight as primary targets for trades or signings. This offseason, right-hander Nick Pivetta has emerged as one of those intriguing surprises. According to insights shared by MLB Network’s JP Morosi on Tuesday, Pivetta is attracting attention thanks to a “surprisingly strong” market surrounding him.

“For someone who was 6-12 this year in the win-loss column and an ERA that doesn’t wow you, his Stuff+ and the peripheral numbers are all very good. Strikeouts-to-walks, he was up around almost five, in terms of the ratio.

“So with [Nick] Pivetta and the underlying numbers (10.2 K/9), that’s the number that executives around the industry are really drawn to. They believe he could become an even more impactful pitcher than he’s been to this point.”

Pivetta’s Last Four Seasons with Red Sox

Games/Starts 129/105
ERA 4.33
Innings 623
K/9 10.2
WHIP 1.24

With his stock experiencing a notable increase, it’s essential to delve into the various factors that contribute to his rising appeal and identify the teams that are most likely to vie for his services in the upcoming season.

Multiple Contenders Eying Nick Pivetta

Pivetta faces a pivotal decision after receiving a $21.05 million qualifying offer from the Boston Red Sox. He has until November 19 (4 p.m. ET) to accept or decline. Accepting secures a one-year deal with the Red Sox, while declining allows him to explore free agency, including potential negotiations with Boston. By extending the qualifying offer, the Red Sox ensure a compensation pick in the 2025 MLB Draft if Pivetta signs elsewhere.
For Pivetta, accepting the offer would mean a significant raise from his 2024 salary ($7.5 million). However, multiple teams are likely to pursue the 31-year-old, given his impressive metrics. This past season, Pivetta posted a 4.14 ERA, but his expected ERA was a more impressive 3.59. Additionally, he has increased his strikeout numbers over the past two seasons, ranking sixth among MLB starting pitchers in K-BB rate (22.9%), sandwiched between Jack Flaherty and Logan Gilbert.
Pivetta’s decision will significantly impact his 2025 season and potentially beyond. With his strong performance and the current market demand for quality starters, he has a compelling choice to make.
