Minor Lines 6/20: Is Tyler Uberstine a call-up candidate?

The right-hander is getting a great start in Triple-A.

Worcester: W, 7-1 (BOX SCORE)

Tyler Uberstine is an example of a guy who might be given a chance at a Major League level before the end of the year. He’s about to be surrendered to the Rule 5 draft, loves the top of the strike zone with his 95 mile an hour fastball, and he’s 26 and has been pitching very well since being promoted from Portland earlier in the year. Though he lacked the strikeouts, this six-inning outing was no different, and he was helped by Blaze Jordan having a great game including a bases-clearing triple. In fact, everyone save for McDonough managed at least one hit, and even he scored twice due to reaching on sac flys. Uberstine may have fared well, but even if he didn’t, Worcester’s bats were on it yesterday against Buffalo (Jays AAA).

Portland: W, 8-2 (BOX SCORE)

You know it’s going to be a good day when your one-and-two-hole hitters get a triple (James Tibbs) and a home run (Mikey Romero). Romero had four RBIs total on the day since he also drove in two on a second hit. The pitching staff, which included a Noah Song three-inning relief appearance, held Akron (Guardians AA) to a four-hit day and struck out eleven, and catcher Ronald Rosario sealed the deal with his second home run this week.

Greenville: W, 3-2 (BOX SCORE)

Despite Eduardo Rivera going 6 1⁄3 innings and allowing just one run via a home run and striking out eight, the Grasshoppers (Pirates High-A) stayed in there with the Drive until the late going, when Nelly Taylor drove Miguel Bleis in to break the tie in the bottom of the eighth and Isaac Stebens held the line for the save. All told, Greenville pitchers struck out thirteen on the night and walked zero.

Salem: L, 0-3 (BOX SCORE)

It likely will not be a good night offensively if just one of your top five hitters in the lineup gets a hit. Luckily, Justyn Gonzales managed multiple, but the team managed just four scoring opportunities against the Nationals and got a hit on zero of them. Pitching allowed just six hits, but it’s hard to compete with no run support.

Have a happy Saturday!
