Plus, multiple hits from Roman Anthony and Vaughn Grissom in a less-than-promising day overall for the farm.
I hope, if applicable, you and yours had a Happy Mother’s Day. Even on a surface level, the Sunday was certainly made sweeter from a great Lucas Giolito outing and a Red Sox series win. Let’s get into Sunday’s action.
Worcester: L, 0-6 (BOX SCORE)

Just five hits on Sunday afternoon for Worcester, two each from Roman Anthony and Vaughn Grissom. I do find it particularly intriguing, by the way, that Nate Eaton, an outfielder by trade and part-time pitcher, is playing third more recently. Defensively, following a short but promising Josh Winckowski start, the WooSox bullpen let Lehigh Valley (Phillies AAA) go station-to -tation on them, issuing seven walks and letting those baserunners advance. By the way, one of those runs on a walk issued: old friend Christian Arroyo!
Portland: W, 6-5 (F/10) (BOX SCORE)

All told, the Sea Dogs struck out seventeen Bowie… ugh, I mean Chesapeake… BaySox (Orioles AA) in ten innings of play before Jhostynxon Garcia played hero and knocked in Manfred runner Ahbram Liendo. Although David Sandlin allowed three runs via a home run and, later, a long single by Frederick Bencosme, he struck out nine while not allowing a walk, and Connelly Early, who’s generally been starting or following an opener this season, came in for five solid innings of relief, striking out eight and grabbing the decision following the Garcia walk-off. Keeping Early in the hole due to Game 2 yesterday being cancelled, as Early was assumedly going to be the starter there, worked highly in Portland’s favor as he was, as he’s been all season, on top of his game.
Greenville: L, 0-6 (BOX SCORE)

Nazzan Zanetello is an intriguing and frustrating prospect. He has impressive power, extremely impressive speed, notable arm strength, and all the makings of a five-tool prospect, but he’s just had such a slow start to his career and needs to shorten his swing up, as he’s continued his offensive woes. So, too, did the rest of Greenville’s lineup Sunday. Despite Brandon Clarke having a short but good outing, striking out seven of the nine batters he faced, and the rest of the staff totaling thirteen strikeouts against the Emperors (Braves High-A), the 2-through-4 spots alone struck out seven times. Franklin Arias continues to gather hits, though, as he’s found his swing in High-A. It’s just unfortunate Greenville wasn’t able to gather any runs and fell by the same score as Worcester.
Greenville: L, 3-4 (BOX SCORE)

This was a messy game defensively, as the Woodpeckers (Astros A) and the Red Sox combined for five errors. Salem also caught the strikeout bug, as they were sat down sixteen times on an evening on which they captured just three hits. Six runners were left in scoring position by way of the Woodpeckers opening up the basepaths via six walks; ultimately, the theme of the day was lack of capitalization by the farm.
Have a happy Monday, and, if you’re so inclined, go Celtics!
