Boston needs a win to avoid falling back to .500 yet again.
It would behoove the Red Sox to win this game. Not just because it would behoove them them to win any game, but because it’s by far the most favorable pitching opponent they’re going to see for a few days. Tomorrow they will be facing Tarik Skubal, and then after an off day on Thursday, they are currently slated to run into Chris Sale on Friday when they return home against Atlanta.
Given they’ve already lost the first game of this series, winning tonight would be a great way to kill off some aligning ingredients for a losing streak. The Sox have not been swept all year, and if they want to keep it that way this week, tonight is the easiest path.
They will send Brayan Bello to the mound against Tyler Holton, but this is very much a bullpen game coming for Detroit. Keider Montero will likely serve as their bulk guy.
Elsewhere on the card, the bottom of the Sox lineup leaves a lot to be desired. Trevor Story is sitting this one out to start (probably because he’s hitting .122 with a .350 OPS in his last 18 games) and he is replaced at shortstop by David Hamilton. Unfortunately, the Sox are just 3-10 in games he gets at least three plate appearances, and he’s batting just .172 with a .480 OPS on the season. If only there was a top ranked shortstop prospect in Worcester who could solve this problem …
