Former Red Sox Rising Star Projected for Outfield Resurgence

January 12, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora has claimed that Japanese left fielder Masataka Yoshida could return to playing in the outfield. Last season, Yoshida had to make a role adjustment and switch to designated hitter. But it wasn’t a huge transition as Yoshida played DH in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). Due to his arm health in 2024, Yoshida was used as the DH for practically all of 2024. Yoshida played only one game in the outfield. He also suffered a thumb injury that left him absent for a month.

Yoshida underwent surgery to repair a labrum tear on October 3rd, 2024. Dr. Evan O’Donnell performed the surgery on the 31-year-old. While Yoshida was experiencing the lingering shoulder issue since spring training, it didn’t interfere with his playing time. But Yoshida was still playing through an injury all season. Currently, Yoshida is still recovering from his injury and hasn’t commenced any throwing as of yet.

Yoshida’s Flexibility in the Red Sox Roster

The 2025 season brings versatility and flexibility to the Red Sox’s roster. While Yoshida will likely return to the outfield, having him as a platoon option at DH provides them with options if needed. The former 2023 rookie sensation finished 6th in the Rookie of the Year voting. Yoshida has three years and about $54 million remaining on his contract. Overall, Yoshida has more experience playing in the outfield than DH.

In 2023, Yoshida played 84 games in left field for the Red Sox and also played outfield in the NPB league. In addition, he recorded a 98 % fielding percentage and only committed three errors. Yoshida will be looking to revamp his 2024 season and make a fresh start. Yoshida mentioned that he prefers to play the outfield role. But Yoshida has showcased potential in the DH role. He has the skill set to record a .850+ OPS, as a DH when healthy. While Yoshida lacks some power, when healthy, he can be effective. He is known for being a quality OBP type of player who drives in runs and keeps the offensive alive. Last season, he recorded 106 hits with a .280 batting average, along with 10 home runs, a .349 OBP, and 56 RBIs.
