Breaking: Ranger Suarez Signs With the Boston Red Sox

January 15, 2026 by Last Word On Baseball

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with Ranger Suarez, inking the southpaw to a five-year deal. Suarez immediately slots in near the front of Boston’s robust rotation, which now includes Garrett Crochet and Sonny Gray. Jon Heyman first reported the news, with contract details leaking out shortly after.

Breaking; Ranger Suarez to Red Sox

After missing out on Alex Bregman, the Red Sox put their foot on the gas and bolstered their rotation in the best remaining way possible. The Red Sox now boast a three-headed monster in their starting rotation—an area that has become the team’s cornerstone heading into 2026. Boston had not signed a free agent to a major league contract all winter, but this move answers one of the most glaring questions they faced entering the offseason.

What Ranger Suarez Means for the Red Sox

Suarez has spent his entire eight-year career with the Philadelphia Phillies. A one-time All-Star in 2024, he has recorded a 3.25 ERA dating back to the 2021 season. He provides a massive boost to Boston’s rotation and is coming off his best season in 2025. Last year, Suarez posted a 3.20 ERA (3.21 FIP) with a 137 ERA+.

With postseason aspirations in 2026, the Red Sox needed to land someone who truly moved the needle. Suarez fits that mold, owning a career 1.48 ERA in the playoffs. Boston also needed another left-hander to pair with Crochet, and Suarez checks that box as well.

Boston Rotation Heading Into 2026

  • Garrett Crochet
  • Ranger Suárez
  • Sonny Gray
  • Brayan Bello
  • Johan Oviedo

With Brayan Bello and Johan Oviedo rounding things out, Boston quietly has one of the deepest starting rotations in the league. The Sox were also connected to Framber Valdez, but this move likely takes them out of the running. Where Boston can still improve is by replacing Bregman’s bat.

Bo Bichette and Eugenio Suarez have been mentioned as fallback options. The Red Sox can still secure a spot at the winners’ table this offseason if they add a true difference-making hitter. We’ll see what else the Red Sox have in store this winter. After completely revamping their rotation with Suarez, Gray, and Oviedo, Red Sox fans can rejoice in some renewed optimism. Now, Craig Breslow needs to put the exclamation point on the offseason.
