Boston Keeps Eye on the Alex Bregman Sweepstakes

January 26, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Alex Bregman remains available on the free-agent market, and the Boston Red Sox continue working their magic to try to attain him. According to Alex Spier, both the Houston Astros and the Red Sox are engaged, and the Red Sox are looking to acquire Bregman on a four-year deal. In addition, according to Ari Alexander, multiple teams have presented offers to Bregman but on a five-year contract. Bregman’s agent is Scott Boras and Boras has a strong track record of successful clients such as Juan Soto, Bryce Harper, Corey Seager, etc. If you know Boras, you know he is a tough negotiator whose strong tactics lie in seeking large client contracts. However, Red Sox’s plan to offer Bregman a short-term contract could provide an obstacle.

Red Sox want to go shorter with Alex Bregman on a deal of no more than 4 years, per @alexspeier. Both sides remain engaged.

As we know, @AriA1exander reported that there’s at least 3 offers of 5 years for Bregman on the market right now. pic.twitter.com/HkfHJ78L8X

Alex Bregman: The Winning Pedigree for the Red Sox

Looking at the free agency market, Bregman is one of the top position players that remains available. Bregman would be a solid addition to the Red Sox, which needs a right-handed bat in its lineup. Bregman would also help fill the second gap while providing gold glove-caliber defense. While his natural position is third base, he is just as strong as at second base. Bregman’s versatility in the infield makes him an elite free agent signing.

While Bregman has a gold glove for playing third base, Rafael Devers will likely play third for the Red Sox. But this doesn’t mean he can’t take on a full-time role at second. Bregman has experience at both second base and shortstop in his career. Back in November, Bregman discussed that he would be willing to play second base if needed. Bregman would also help improve the Red Sox’s chances of transforming into a contender team. Bregman is a pull-hitter who gets the job done offensively. Last season, he scored solid numbers with a .260 batting average, 3o doubles, 75 RBI, and went yard 26 times with a .768 OPS. Bregman also has a history with Red Sox manager Alex Cora. Cora was a bench coach in 2016 for the Astros and took on managerial duties in 2017. Overall, Bregman has ties with Cora, which would make for an easy adjustment. Also, with Bregman’s clutch hitting and power, he would hit well in Fenway Park.

Other Suitors for Bregman

Aside from the Red Sox, the Detroit Tigers are also one of the teams involved in the star infielder. Could the Tigers snag Bregman away from the Red Sox? The Bregman market continues to heat up and the Tigers are looking to make some noise in 2025 and amplify their roster. Last season was a step in the right direction for the Tigers, who made the postseason for the first time since 2014. The Tigers were a sleeper team in 2024 who came alive late in the season to secure a wild-card spot.

Bregman would be a clutch piece that would help improve their lineup and chances at improving their postseason run for 2025. Bregman would also provide leadership with a young core Tigers clubhouse. But if the Tigers want to improve their chances of landing him they will likely have to increase their offer to Bregman. We must also keep in mind that the Astros are not out of the mix with landing the postseason star, as a reunion could be on the table.
