Veteran third baseman Alex Bregman is set to be a free agent for the second straight offseason. Bregman enters free agency as one of the top available bats with a complete profile: high-level offense, strong defense, postseason experience, and positional value. For teams aiming to compete now, he represents a “difference-maker” piece. However, his price tag, positional fit, and durability will be key negotiation points.

Astros Tenure
Bregman came up to the show in 2016 and helped the Houston Astros win two World Series championships in parts of nine seasons with the organization. Bregman was one of the more feared hitters in Houston’s powerhouse lineup and was a Gold Glove fielder at third base, winning the award in 2024. It was clear after that season, though, that the Astros would be unable to retain his services, and he hit free agency.
2025 with Boston
Bregman signed with the Red Sox in February, with the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs the other finalists in the sweepstakes. Bregman was solid in his first year in Boston, posting a .273 average with 18 home runs and 62 RBI.
The veteran’s defense has quietly become one of his calling cards, especially in the last few seasons as his offensive profile settled into a more balanced, contact-driven approach. While he entered the league viewed primarily as a bat-first infielder, he developed into a metrics-backed, fundamentally sharp defender at third base, finally taking home hardware in his last year with Houston.
Bregman brought more than just his bat to the Sox; his veteran presence was essential. He mentored the rookies, like Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and, while he was up, Kristian Campbell. He helped them adjust to big league life. With his clubhouse leadership, Bregman helped lead the Red Sox to their first postseason appearance since 2021.

Contact Projections
Bregman does not come without concerns to any team that signs him. He has missed time in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons with a quadriceps injury. For a team looking for a long-term option at third base, they likely won’t pay top-tier money for someone who is injury-prone.
Still, Bregman has many suitors for teams needing a solid veteran presence, including the New York Mets, the Cubs, and the Red Sox, among others. Bregman projects to get a contract of about six years, $180–210 million.
