What Josh McDaniels Said About Mac Jones’ Rookie Debut

September 15, 2021 by The Spun

Mac Jones drops back to pass.

The New England Patriots fell short to the Miami Dolphins in the closing minutes of their season opener, but offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was more than pleased with rookie quarterback Mac Jones’ performance.

Jones didn’t necessarily light up the boxscore for New England in Week 1, as he completed 29-of-39 pass attempts for 281 yards and a touchdown. He did have the Patriots in position to take the lead over the Dolphins late in the fourth quarter, however, but a costly fumble by Damien Harris sealed their fate.

When speaking to the media during a recent Zoom call, McDaniels made his thoughts on Jones very clear. The veteran coach is a huge fan of Jones’ competitive nature.

“I think he’s a very competitive guy,” McDaniels said of Jones, via the Boston Herald. “He wants to win at everything that he’s doing. He wants to perform his best every single day on every single rep,” said McDaniels. “I think that’s a great trait and a great quality to have, not only as a football player but as a human being.”

Despite being very accurate in his first NFL game, Jones was disappointed with himself.

“I think we can get better; that’s just how we have to look at it,” Jones told reporters following the Week 1 loss. “Definitely wasn’t good enough, starting with me.”

Mac Jones will have the opportunity to earn his first win of his NFL career this Sunday when the Patriots take on the New York Jets.
