The New England Patriots have released veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, according to the transaction wire.
Hoyer was a backup for starting quarterback Mac Jones this past season, and it seems he’s been supplanted by 2022 draft pick Bailey Zappe.
When Jones suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 3, Hoyer took over as the Patriots’ starting quarterback. Unfortunately, the 37-year-old QB suffered a concussion during the second series of his Week 4 start.
This head injury saw Hoyer slide down to New England’s third-string QB position behind Jones and Zappe.
The Patriots now have just two quarterbacks on their roster, opening the door for the franchise to select a young QB in this year’s draft. The Pats have the No. 14 overall pick and several mid-round spots in this year’s selection process.
Hoyer, an undrafted free agent from the 2009 class, completed just 5 of 6 passes for 37 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions in his 15th NFL season.
