Ty Law makes a case for the Patriots to give Stephon Gilmore new deal

September 14, 2021 by Patriots Wire

With New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore set to be a free agent this season, a Patriots legend is begging the team to work out a new deal for the corner. Ty Law wants New England to sign Gilmore to a new contract.

Gilmore is currently on the PUP list, as he is dealing with a quad injury. The 2017 Defensive Player of the Year has made his mark in New England. With four Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl victory under his belt, he has become a staple of the New England secondary.

Now, Law wants to see the Patriots do right by Gilmore.

“He is one of the guys that really deserves to get paid and be paid what he’s worth,” Law said on WEEI. “You can’t find guys to go out there and say, ‘OK, you got ’em.’ That is very rare.”

Law added: “How much more leverage are you going to have when you’re the (Defensive Player of the Year)? First of all, as a corner to get Defensive Player of the Year, he’s earned it. It was at the end of his first contract. So, yes, I want to get a new contract. Am I going to risk going out there not getting paid, because it’s probably going to be his last one? … This is definitely going to be his last contract.”

In addition to navigating the 2021 season with a rookie quarterback, New England may also have to navigate negotiations with Gilmore moving forward.
