Two receivers cut by Patriots now going to Super Bowl with Chiefs

January 28, 2025 by Patriots Wire

JuJu Smith-Schuster and Tyquan Thornton were both on the New England Patriots roster for training camp. Now, they are going to Super Bowl LIX with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith-Schuster, who was cut by New England over the summer, was the second-leading receiver for the Chiefs in Sunday’s AFC title game against the Buffalo Bills. He helped Kansas City come out on top by hauling in two receptions for 60 yards.

The Patriots passed on extending Jakobi Meyers to sign Smith-Schuster in 2023. It’s a decision that still haunts the team to this very day. Smith Schuster ended up being a one-and-done player in New England, while Meyers has flourished with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Thornton was signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad after being waived by the Patriots last November. The former second-round draft pick out of Baylor didn’t live up to his draft stock with the Patriots, but he’s getting an opportunity to develop in one of the greatest offensive systems in NFL history under coach Andy Reid.

He went from playing for the struggling Patriots to potentially winning his first Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs. Not a bad way to end the season.
