Could the Patriots trade Bill Belichick this offseason? Apparently, there have been rumblings about this happening.
During this Wednesday’s edition of “Pro Football Talk,” Mike Florio talked about the Commanders potentially trading for Belichick.
“What I heard over the weekend from someone I know and someone I trust that made me say, ‘Whoa, that’s interesting’ is the possibility that the end result for the Commanders is a trade with the Patriots for Bill Belichick,” Florio said. “And it makes sense when you think about it. And it puts in a new context that leak. That strange Sunday morning splash report about ‘Bill Belichick in the off-season signed a lucrative multiyear contract with the Patriots. My first thought was that’s Belichick’s camp getting out the idea that this guy ain’t gonna be fired during the season. The other explanation for it is, it’s the Patriots getting out the idea as owners throughout the league begin the process of figuring out who they want to hire next year.”
Florio pointed out that Washington is preparing for the future. That was made clear when the front office shipped out Montez Sweat and Chase Young before the trade deadsline.
Additionally, Florio mentioned that Belichick could hire Josh McDaniels as his offensive coordinator if he gets traded this offseason.
Less than two weeks ago, NFL Network reported that Belichick signed a multiyear extension with the Patriots this past offseason.
Any trade involving Belichick would shake up the landscape of the league, there’s no doubt about it. However, this is merely speculation at this point in time.
