Longtime NFL assistant coach Steve Sidwell passed away Wednesday at the age of 78.
Sidwell’s coaching career at the professional and collegiate levels spanned more than three decades from 1966-2002. Included in that run were two stints with the New England Patriots (1982-84, 1997-99), with the latter one being a turn as defensive coordinator.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft released a statement on Sidwell’s passing Thursday afternoon.
“I am sad to learn of the passing of Steve Sidwell,” Kraft said. “I really enjoyed the time I spent with him while he was here. He was always very honest and candid in his evaluation of our players and our performances. My thoughts are with his wife, Kathleen, his family and all who are mourning his loss. He will be missed.”

In addition to Stidwell’s time with the Patriots, he served as the defensive line coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 1985 before becoming the defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints from 1986-94.
He was also the defensive coordinator of the Houston Oilers (1995-96) and Seattle Seahawks (2000-02).
Our thoughts and prayers are with Sidwell’s family and friends at this time.
