The Patriots have made the playoffs only once in the past three years and many have blamed the team’s seeming unwillingness to spend big on free agents as a culprit. So team owner Robert Kraft has made a promise to fans.
Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal spoke to Kraft about the team’s lack of spending. Per Bedard, Kraft said that head coach and de facto general manager Bill Belichick has never been denied everything he wants from a cash-spending perspective and has never set limits on what the team can spend.
Kraft promised that he would sell the team if money spending ever became an issue.
“He says, ‘He has never come to me and not gotten everything he wanted from a cash-spending perspective. We have never set limits.’ And he further went on to say, ‘Money spending will never be the issue, I promise you, or I’ll sell the team.’ So that’s pretty definitive,” Bedard said.

Even if the Patriots were among the top spenders in the league, there isn’t always a correlation between how much you spend and how much you win. The NFL isn’t European soccer, after all.
Will the Patriots’ thrifty spending habits be allow them to continue contending for playoff spots?
