Mac Jones reportedly landed in hot water with Bill Belichick when seeking outside assistance to improve a subpar New England Patriots offense.
In a radio interview on Zolak and Bertrand, NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms said the quarterback grew “frustrated” with the offense’s lack of creativity. The head coach found out Jones called people at Alabama for tips.
“I do think he was a little bit in the proverbial doghouse with Belichick a little bit because, yes, I was told that he was calling around and trying to ask, ‘Hey, we need some ideas for the offense.’ And word got back to Bill, and that was why he was in the doghouse a little bit,” Simms said.
Simms didn’t know if Jones talked to Bill O’Brien when reaching out to his alma mater. O’Brien spent the last two seasons as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator before accepting the same position with the Patriots.
Jones regressed in most categories during his second season, throwing 14 touchdowns in as many games with 6.8 yards per pass attempt. He often showed visible anger on the field and appeared to yell, “Throw the f—– ball” at offensive play-caller Matt Patricia during a loss.
New England hired O’Brien to fix an offense that finished 26th during the 2022 season. Jones is reportedly “very excited” about the move.
