Report: Bengals Starter A Cut Candidate; Teams Could Show Interest

July 15, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Cincinnati Bengals guard Cordell Volson has protected Joe Burrow throughout his first three seasons in the league, but that could change in 2025. A fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the North Dakota State product started 48 of a possible 51 games throughout his time in the league. However, despite the extended playing time, he’s never been a particularly effective starter. Last year, he finished with a 59.1 PFF grade, the 51st-best mark in the league out of 77 eligible players.

According to Paul Dehner of The Athletic, the Bengals could cut Cordell Volson if he doesn’t win the starting job. Now entering the final year of his contract, Cincinnati can clear $2.47 million in cap space if they release or trade him. That’s a lot of money to spend on a backup guard, so perhaps they let him go, but they could probably find someone willing to send a conditional late-round pick for his services.

Possible Fits

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots have done everything in their power to build a competent offense to support franchise quarterback Drake Maye. While they bolstered the tackle position with free agent Morgan Moses and first-round pick Will Campbell, they still need help at left guard. Cole Strange is the current frontrunner for the job, but he missed most of last year with a serious injury and never impressed even when healthy. Assuming the Bengals part ways with him, Cordell Volson could provide some challenge at the position and could marginally improve this offensive line.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have great tackles and one of the game’s top centers in Tyler Linderbaum, but the guard position leaves something to be desired. Andrew Vorhees and Daniel Faalele are both major question marks, and Cordell Volson should provide some stability to the position. Additionally, Baltimore probably enjoys the idea of stealing a starter from a division rival.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints will spend the 2025 season trying to turn second-round pick Tyler Shough into a franchise quarterback, and the best way to do that is by securing the offensive line. After struggling at tackle, first-round pick Trevor Penning will have the first shot at winning the left guard battle. Perhaps this transition will work, but the Saints should call the Bengals about Cordell Volson in case Penning cant’ figure it out at a new position. While he doesn’t have the highest ceiling, Volson provides a base level of competence that should help this offense.

Kansas City Chiefs

Much like the Saints, the Chiefs are betting on a struggling tackle to fill their need at left guard. Second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia had a disastrous rookie season and now faces the unenviable job of trying to replace Joe Thuney. The Chiefs have Super Bowl aspirations and might prefer a proven option like Cordell Volson to solidify the interior of the offensive line.
