Alex Van Pelt will be spending 2025 among Sean McVay’s ranks.
The former New England Patriots offensive coordinator has been hired by the Los Angeles Rams as a senior offensive assistant, the organization announced Monday.
Van Pelt, 54, was not retained in January under Mike Vrabel. He had joined previous head coach Jerod Mayo’s staff last offseason. And during the 4-13 campaign, the ex-NFL quarterback served as the team’s offensive playcaller while guiding the development of rookie starter Drake Maye.
The No. 3 overall pick from the University of North Carolina completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 2,276 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. An additional 421 yards and two touchdowns arrived by ground on the way to becoming a Pro Bowl alternate. But the Patriots conceded 52 sacks, averaged 17 points per game, converted on 34.8 percent of third downs and on 46.8 percent of trips to the red zone.
“The thing that I can hang my hat on is that this team has played hard,” Van Pelt told reporters prior to New England’s season finale. “There’s not been any game where they have not put out their full effort. That’s impressive. It’s easy for a lot of teams and I’ve been around teams that are out of the playoffs and kind of just cruise to the end. We’re going to try to finish strong. We started fast. That was my message to them. We started fast with a win, let’s finish strong with a win at home in front of our crowd. Whatever happens after that, we’ll see. I would love to be back. I really like the organization. I like our guys. There’s stuff to build on there, but again, that’s out of my control.”
Prior to landing in Foxborough, Van Pelt spent four years as the offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. Quarterbacks coach was added to his responsibilities in 2023, when five different starters were called upon and veteran Joe Flacco won NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
Selected in the eighth round of the 1993 NFL draft out of the University of Pittsburgh, Van Pelt’s run in the league spanned 31 games and 11 starts through stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.
After the conclusion of his playing career, Van Pelt volunteered at the University of Buffalo before working as the quarterbacks coach of NFL Europe’s Frankfurt Galaxy in 2005. He circled back to the AFC East with the Bills from 2006 through 2009, holding the titles of offensive quality control coach, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. Roles with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals followed from 2010 through 2019.
New England’s 2025 staff, which was finalized as the calendar turned to February, features Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator, Terrell Williams as defensive coordinator and Jeremy Springer as special teams coordinator.
