The Texas A&M product is one of the top edge defenders in this year’s draft.
The New England Patriots keep showing a keen interest in the edge defenders available in this year’s draft. After setting up 30 visits with Abdul Carter, Oluwafemi Oladejo and Nic Scourton, they will also bring another highly-regarded edge into Gillette Stadium.
Shemar Stewart, a teammate of Scourton’s at Texas A&M and projected first-round draft pick, will visit with the team later this week. Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network was first to report the upcoming meeting.
Stewart, 21, spent his entire three-year college career with the Aggies. A third-team All-SEC selection in 2024, he finished his time in College Station with 37 in-game appearances and 13 starts. Along the way, he registered 65 tackles as well as 79 combined quarterback pressures, including 4.5 sacks.
Deciding to forgo his final year of eligibility, he delivered one of the most impressive workouts at this year’s Scouting Combine. Standing at 6-foot-5 and 267 pounds, he ended up in the 90-plus percentile for edge defenders in several categories: his broad jump (98; 10’11”), vertical jump (96; 40”) and 40-yard dash (90; 4.59s) all hit that mark. As a result, he scored a rare 10.00 Relative Athletic Score.
The Patriots being interested in Stewart comes as little surprise given their previous reported 30 visits as well as the fact that the position group has room for improvement. At the moment, Anfernee Jennings as well as free agency pickups Harold Landry and K’Lavon Chaisson sit atop the depth chart.
New England making an early investment in the group would therefore not be a surprise. Stewart, a likely fringe top-10 selection, appears to be a realistic candidate.
