The Patriots’ captain will be around an extra season.
The Patriots and safety Patrick Chung have agreed to a one-year extension through 2021, per sources. A key contributor who continues to play at a high level.

Chung was already under contract for two more seasons, so this extension was not time sensitive. While we have to wait for the contract details for confirmation, it’s likely that Chung received extra guaranteed money up front in exchange for adding another year to his contract. It’s unlikely that this will create much cap space because Chung’s cap hit is already very low.
Chung joins Stephon Gilmore as the two starters under contract for three more seasons. Jason McCourty, Duron Harmon, and J.C. Jackson are under contract for two more years. Devin McCourty is a free agent after the 2019 season and is likely to be the next player to receive a contract extension, and provide exceptional continuity in the secondary.
Congratulations to Chung!
UPDATE: Chung’s contract details below.
