The New England Patriots are releasing veteran defensive back Jalen Mills, per ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
This move will save the Pats around $5 million in cap space heading into the 2023 season. He originally signed a four-year deal with New England prior to the 2021 season.
Mills spent the last two years in New England. The 28-year-old cornerback’s 2022 season came to an end when he suffered a groin injury in Week 12. Through 10 games, he logged 31 tackles, two interceptions and five passes defended.
Mills began his NFL career as a seventh-round pick for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016. He spent the first five seasons of his career in Philly before making his way to New England in 2021.
If the Eagles are unable to re-sign C.J. Gardner Johnson, they could go after a newly-available Mills in free agency.
