The Patriots decided to clear out their quarterback room before Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline, waiving Malik Cunningham and Bailey Zappe. That left Mac Jones as the only signal-caller on the roster.
So, what will the Patriots do at quarterback? According to Mike Giardi, the team wants a veteran option behind Jones on the depth chart.
“I’m told the Patriots’ preference remains bringing in a veteran option to be the #2 to Mac Jones,” Giardi reported on Wednesday.
Even though the Patriots prefer a veteran backup for the 2023 season, they’re not done with Zappe.
Giardi claims the Patriots would “still like to work with” Zappe. That’s possible now that he has officially cleared waivers and is expected to join New England’s practice squad.
And yes, the Pats would “still like to work with” Bailey Zappe. On another note, I’ve grown to loathe that phrase. https://t.co/4gW4vNsnzH

There was some speculation that Brian Hoyer could join the Patriots, but that option has been ruled out.
It’ll be interesting to see which quarterback signs with New England in the coming days.
