Saturday morning brought with it the news that the New England Patriots will release a veteran quarterback.
No, it’s not Mac Jones – despite his hefty struggles during the 2022 campaign without a true offensive coordinator. Instead, the team will reportedly move on from longtime NFL quarterback Brian Hoyer.
“The #Patriots are expected to release veteran QB Brian Hoyer by the start of the new league year on 3/15, a source said. Hoyer signed a 2-year deal worth $4m ($3m fully guaranteed) in March of 2022,” NFL insider Adam Caplan said this morning.
Hoyer saw action in just one game last season, completing 5-of-6 passes for 38 yards. With both Jones and second-year quarterback Bailey Zappe on the roster, the team decided it was time to move on from the veteran.
Following the move, the Patriots will likely add to the quarterback room before the 2023 season kicks off.
