Patriots Release Veteran Running Back They Signed In Free Agency

It’s been a rough few months for running back James Robinson. After starting the 2022 season as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ starting back, he’s now going to be seeking his fourth NFL team in just the past eight months.

Robinson was released by the New England Patriots today, ending his run with the team just three months after signing a two-year, $8 million deal with the team. The move clears around $1.6 million in cap space for the Patriots.

In his first two seasons, Robinson was one of the lone bright spots on some terrible Jacksonville Jaguars teams. He had over 1,000 rushing yards as a rookie and almost 1,000 yards from scrimmage in 2021.

But after six weeks in 2022, Robinson fell out of favor and was traded to the New York Jets. However, Robinson couldn’t regain his form in New York.

After joining the Jets in October, James Robinson played in three straight games before being listed as inactive for six of the last seven games.

Robinson is yet another example of how quickly a running back can rise to the top and fall out of favor in the NFL.

Will James Robinson find a team to play for in 2023?
