By signing Ezekiel Elliott, the New England Patriots added an experienced and accomplished veteran to their running back corps.
Third-year pro Rhamondre Stevenson is set to be New England’s top ballcarrier this season, though Elliott’s presence could cut into his workload somewhat.
Judging by the 2021 fourth-round pick’s reaction to the signing though, Stevenson is excited about having Zeke in the fold.

As a rookie, Stevenson played the No. 2 role to Damien Harris, rushing for 606 yards and five touchdowns on 123 carries in 12 regular season games.
Last season, however, Stevenson shouldered more of the load as Harris appeared in only 11 contests. The University of Oklahoma product led the Patriots in all three major rushing categories, logging 210 carries, 1,040 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Stevenson is still RB1 going into the season, with Elliott functioning as his backup. Elliott’s short-yardage proficiency and pass blocking skills will serve him well as a role player.
Behind those two, veteran free agent Ty Montgomery, 2022 fourth-round pick Pierre Strong and 2022 sixth-round pick Kevin Harris are among those vying for roster spots at the running back position.
