Patriots Projected to Trade for Two-Time Pro Bowler – Chargers, Panthers, Cowboys May Intervene

January 25, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

trade jeffrey simmons

The New England Patriots could trade for two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jeffery Simmons this upcoming offseason. According to one source, they believe the Titan star could be on the trade block after liking a social media post about the Patriots acquiring him in a trade. It makes sense considering the history between Vrabel and Simmons since he’ll likely make several moves to change the culture in New England since former head coach Bill Belichick left. This comes after Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver, AJ Brown was reading a book on the sidelines and Vrabel was quick to respond to that.

However, even though Simmons does not desire a trade out of the Titans, it might just happen either way. Originally selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Mississippi State product came into the league as one of the best interior defensive linemen. Simmons was the subject of trade rumors this past deadline last season so he should have no shortage of suitors if the Titans make him available. The defensive tackle is still under contract through 2027 but after recording 76 tackles, five sacks, a couple of fumbles and four passes defense, he might as well consider it since the Titans are nowhere near to being a postseason contender anytime soon.

Meanwhile, the Patriots have all the eggs in the basketball as long as Vrabel makes the right moves to make life easier for quarterback Drake Maye. However, he would have to carefully assess the defensive situation. Teams like Chargers, Panthers and Cowboys should have that same interest coming this free agency.

Help for Harbaugh’s Defense

Even though the offense’s passing game was atrocious, Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter formed one of the best pass-rushing units in the league. Harbaugh loves a good physical style defense but unfortunately, it will look different after the offseason depending on which impending free agents return. Khalil Mack changes his mind and wants to play again but there’s no guarantee he’ll want to do so in Los Angeles. Joey Bosa might be cut due to salary concerns so this means the Chargers will be looking for fine replacements to fill the gaps.

Poona Ford is a man they cannot afford to lose in free agency so perhaps since the team has the cap space, they could afford to sign him back. Meanwhile, Morgan Fox has been quiet and he’ll likely be looking for a new job. However, they should look for some reinforcements on one side of the trenches and trade for Jeffrey Simmons to provide some relief and keep this defense on balance.

Rebuilding Carolina

Quarterback Bryce Young finally has the trust of his coaches in Carolina, but he can’t be the god they can depend on without a stellar defense. It’s time for the Panthers to build a legitimate defense that helps Young the ball more often. Jadeveon Clowney will probably return alongside Derrick Brown so they should add another ferocious talent like Simmons. This could fortify the trenches for Carolina as this new three-set lineman could be enough to set other offenses on fire and head back to the postseason.

A Rare Move?

As for the Cowboys, it’s hard to imagine this team will do anything this free agency since Stephen Jones said last offseason will be similar to this year. However, owner Jerry Jones should put the money behind him and build a roster that lets the players play. Since losing key defensive pieces like Dante Fowler Jr. and Dorance Armstrong, the team should be in the market to make a splash trade to at least improve the pass rush in acquiring Simmons. Meanwhile, Micah Parsons needs help from another talent to run all over the opposing offenses.
