The Patriots’ backup quarterback situation has taken yet another sharp turn.
On Saturday morning, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that New England signed Bailey Zappe to its 53-man roster.
“The #Patriots are signing QB Bailey Zappe to the 53-man roster, per source,” Pelissero said. “So after two weeks of drama, it appears New England is back to the original depth chart and Zappe will back up Mac Jones on Sunday vs. the #Eagles.”
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport then revealed that Matt Corral was released by the Patriots in order to make room for Zappe.
Corral, a former third-round pick from Ole Miss, was claimed off waivers by the Patriots less than two weeks ago. He started his NFL career with the Panthers.

The fact that New England released Corral shortly after adding him to the roster is very bizarre, especially since no other team put in a waiver claim.
Corral is still waiting for his big break in the NFL. Unfortunately, his rookie season was cut short due to a season-ending Lisfranc injury.
