Patriots Cut First-Round Pick After Controversial Post, Could Land With Chiefs, Chargers

September 19, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Jalen Reagor Cut

The Jalen Reagor Era in New England ended in unceremonious fashion, as the team cut him following a rather controversial post on his Instagram story. Famously selected one pick ahead of superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson, Reagor flamed out with the Philadelphia Eagles and spent 2023 bouncing on and off the New England Patriots roster. Reagor spent the first two weeks of 2024 on New England’s practice squad, but that came to a crashing halt following an ill-advised social media post.

Reagor recently posted the “Rich Car Bad House” meme to his story, seemingly implying that he was the fancy car and the house was the New England Patriots. Head coach Jerod Mayo apparently didn’t like this, as Reagor took down the post and the Patriots cut him shortly thereafter. Doug Kyed of The Boston Herald reported the Jalen Reagor release “wasn’t the direct result of the social media post,” but it’s fair to say it played a role. Reagor never justified his first-round draft capital, but the TCU product could land a job with the Kansas City Chiefs or Los Angeles Chargers.

Chiefs, Chargers Could Target Jalen Reagor After Unceremonious Cut

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl despite a glaring need at wide receiver. The team seemingly addressed this issue by signing Marquise Brown and selecting Xavier Worthy, but it didn’t take long for injuries to rear their ugly head. Brown suffered a collarbone injury in the preseason that will likely sideline him for the duration of the regular season. With Travis Kelce also slowing down, Kansas City’s passing game runs through Worthy and second-year wideout Rashee Rice. Patrick Mahomes can get by with this level of talent, but it wouldn’t hurt to take a flier on the recently cut Jalen Reagor.

Jalen Reagor has yet to realize his athletic potential, but the wide receiver can be an effective gadget player. He’s legitimately dangerous as a returner and has the speed to challenge defenses vertically. While Reagor cannot perfectly replicate the speed of Marquise Brown, the wideout could cut out a roster spot on this lackluster depth chart. Andy Reid is perhaps the game’s most gifted offensive mind and he should find some use for Reagor in this offense. If nothing else, he can’t be worse than Kadarius Toney was last year.

More Help For Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers enter Week 3 with a 2-0 record thanks in large part to their strong defense and reliable running game. However, if they want to keep up with the AFC’s elite teams, they’ll eventually need to throw the football. Justin Herbert is one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, but he currently ranks 21st in EPA/play thanks to his poor supporting cast. Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston had their moments through the first two weeks of the season, but it wouldn’t hurt to add another reliable receiver into the mix. Jalen Reagor might not be the most inspiring option, but the recently cut wideout could find a home in Los Angeles.

The Chargers signed DJ Chark to be the vertical threat in this offense. Unfortunately, the wide receiver suffered a hip injury and landed on the injured reserve before Week 1, meaning he’ll be out for at least the next two weeks. Los Angeles made it this far without him, but they could use Reagor’s vertical ability to inject some life into this passing attack.
