Patriots, Commanders Connected in Possible Blockbuster Trade

July 22, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite the rumors all offseason, the New England Patriots are the latest NFL team that could look into a Terry McLaurin trade. According to a report, one source believes the Patriots could look for another wide receiver to pair with Stefon Diggs in the aerial attack after signing him to a three-year deal. McLaurin has been the subject of trade rumors for the past few weeks after skipping mandatory camp in hopes of a new extension with the Commanders. Even though the latest report indicates that the Commanders aren’t looking to trade McLaurin, the team hasn’t been proactive in securing a deal before the 2025 campaign.

Originally selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Ohio State product would be an interesting playmaker in Drake Maye’s rebuilding offense this upcoming season if the trade happens. Head Coach Mike Vrabel has plenty of wideouts in past regimes, but he is trying to instill his philosophy and get some new weapons in a fresh start. This is why he got Mack Hollins and Diggs during free agency, as the Patriots have been lacking a consistent pass-catcher for several years since Tom Brady left New England. The fact that McLaurin was putting up huge numbers even before Jayden Daniels’ arrival in Washington shows his true potential, and the Patriots won’t be the only ones who could chase him in a potential trade.

Patriots, Commanders Connected in Possible Terry McLaurin Trade

Other Best Fits

Los Angeles Chargers

If the Los Angeles Chargers want to make it back to the playoffs next year, they can’t lean on Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston for all the exploding plays. After losing Mike Williams to retirement, the Chargers should be in the market for a wide receiver, as Justin Herbert thrives better when throwing the football. The team has been struggling to find a consistent pass-catcher for the past two seasons, and it’s time for the Chargers to make a massive trade. McLaurin would not only check off all of their boxes, but he could be the new face in Los Angeles for a long time.

You can’t expect to have a winning season when you’re expecting Jalen Reagor to step up, as he’s more of a journeyman behind the scenes. McLaurin could turn McConkey and Johnston into capable weapons for Herbert to thrive in more competitive scenarios when you’re up against teams like the Chiefs, Ravens and Bills.

Kansas City Chiefs

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs themselves will be without one of their top wideouts, Rashee Rice, for a couple of games this regular season. Between Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown, the Chiefs could use a temporary WR1 at least for one season. McLaurin fits the description and could join the Chiefs in a situational moment if the Commanders are willing to trade him.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints aren’t contenders this 2025 campaign, but it’s hard to imagine they won’t keep investing in the aerial attack to help Chris Olave, who is coming off his gruesome injury. Rashid Shaheed is explosive and can turn up the field, but Brandin Cooks is way past his prime. At least, McLaurin could get more looks in this offense and make either Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler better.
