Jalen Hurd’s sudden retirement created an open spot on the Patriots roster and Bill Belichick didn’t take long to fill it.
On Tuesday the team announced the signing of wide receiver Thyrick Pitts, who New England claimed off waivers from the Chicago Bears.
The 6-foot-1, 201-pound wideout was originally signed by the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Delaware back in May, but was released by Chicago on Monday.
In 48 collegiate games, Pitts posted career marks of 172 receptions, 2,429 yards and 23 touchdowns; catching 57 balls for 631 yards and 10 scores in 13 games last season.

Hurd, a former-third round pick of the San Francisco 49ers out of Baylor, failed to get on the field due to injuries. However, he attempted to make a comeback with the Pats, ultimately deciding to walk away from the game at just 27-years-old.
During the draft process Pitts was viewed as a potential late-round find due to his size, speed and explosiveness, along with his soft hands. Footwork and route running were things that scouts believed he had to work on though.
He’ll get the chance to prove himself under one of the all-time coaches this summer.
