The Patriots will not be using the franchise tag on standout cornerback Jonathan Jones, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Jones made a huge impact for the Patriots during the 2022 season, racking up 69 total tackles, 11 passes defended, four interceptions and three forced fumbles.
Even though Jones will hit the open market, the Patriots reportedly have interest in bringing him back.
NFL fans aren’t surprised by the Patriots allowing a top-tier cornerback to become a free agent. We watched a similar situation unfold with J.C. Jackson last year.
“Classic NE,” one fan tweeted.
Another fan said, “Cool, he’s gone then.”
“Who in gods name was expecting the Pats to franchise tag Jonathan Jones for $18 mil,” a Twitter user added.
Jones, 29, should receive a lot of interest in free agency. Teams are always looking for help in the secondary.
The Patriots have to be willing to spend top dollar if they want to retain Jones this offseason.
