The Philadelphia Eagles have a bunch of vacancies on their coaching staff to fill after both of their coordinators accepted head coaching jobs. Will one of those vacancies be filled by New England Patriots assistant Matt Patricia?
According to Patriots insider Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, Patricia could be in line to join the Eagles’ coaching staff. Per the report, he would be in line to be named the team’s new linebackers coach.
The Eagles’ linebackers coach position was recently vacated when Nick Rallis departed to become the new defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals. Philadelphia have since hired Sean Desai as their new offensive coordinator.
Eagles fans aren’t exactly thrilled by the idea of Patricia joining their team’s staff though. The one word that seems to be getting used the most by Eagles fans is “No.”
Matt Patricia is a bit of a polarizing coach. He’s had six top 10 defenses as defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, but had the league’s worst defense as head coach of the Detroit Lions in 2020.
This past year Patricia had a role in coordinating the offense and the team struggled mightily under his leadership.
It’s hard to know how much of Patricia’s success is a result of working alongside Bill Belichick versus his own skill.
If the Eagles do wind up hiring him, they’ll find out firsthand in 2023.
