A former New England Patriots coach could inquire about Mac Jones this offseason.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported “chatter” about the Las Vegas Raiders attempting to acquire the 24-year-old quarterback. However, it’s “unlikely” the Pats would consider trading Jones.
Josh McDaniels was New England’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during Jones’ rookie year, and Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler served as the director of player personnel when the Patriots drafted Jones.
Fans are torn over a rumored hypothetical that almost certainly won’t happen this offseason.
“If the Patriots can get the 38th pick from the Raiders for Mac, I’d do it in a heartbeat,” a fan wrote.
“Mac Jones is and will be a Patriot,” another fan said.
“If Pats got [Anthony] Richardson I’d be ok with this,” a fan wrote.
“If JMD wants Mac Jones so bad, he can go back to New England,” another fan advised.
“They trade for Mac Jones and I promise you I’ll take a break from supporting this team,” a Raiders fan wrote. “I’m already teetering on the edge.”
McDaniels landing another former Patriots quarterback seems more likely. Per Graziano, multiple sources expect the Raiders to pursue free-agent Jimmy Garoppolo.
They’re also a “team to watch” if the Green Bay Packers trade Aaron Rodgers.
Jones backslid in his second season after a promising rookie year alongside McDaniels. The first-round pick averaged just 6.8 yards per pass attempt with 11 picks and 14 passing touchdowns in as many games.
Yet New England brought back offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien to help revamp a stagnant offense. Even if they were ready to prematurely end the Jones era, the Patriots aren’t well positioned to draft a replacement with the 14th pick.
Reuniting with McDaniels in an offense featuring star wide receiver Davante Adams and tight end Darren Waller would be an incredible scenario for Jones. However, it’s not one anyone should count on happening.
