It sounds like a quarterback controversy is brewing in New England.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently commented on Mac Jones’ future with the Patriots. The Alabama product just finished his second season in the NFL.
Breer thinks the Patriots would consider entertaining trade offers for Jones because they don’t see a “massive gap” between him and Bailey Zappe.
“I think they would,” Breer said, via NBC Sports Boston. “Internally, I don’t know if they see this massive gap between Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe. I’m not saying they think Bailey’s as good as Mac, but there was some element of Bailey doing what he was coached to do last year that I think gave Bailey the edge to some degree for a little while there.”
Honestly, this isn’t a huge surprise. Jones was benched for Zappe during the Patriots’ loss to the Bears on Oct. 24.
Zappe finished his rookie year with 781 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.
On the flip side, the Patriots recently hired Bill O’Brien as their offensive coordinator. They may want to see if he can get the best out of Jones next season.
Besides, the Patriots have Jones under contract through the 2024 season with a team option for 2025.
