New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick appears to be heading into the single life for the foreseeable future.
According to the Daily Mail via Savage Sports, Belichick has split with his longtime girlfriend Linda Holiday. The two have been together since 2007, but the breakup between them has reportedly been “drawn-out” for around a year now.
One outlet reported that the breakup has some members of the New England Patriots front office concerned for Belichick. Specifically, there are fears that Holiday might start retaliating with harmful social media posts.
Some feel that the amount of harm Holiday can is overblown, but others seem tickled at the idea of Holiday being able to potentially ruin Belichick’s career. Still others decided to make some jokes at Belichick’s expense:

Laughable
The idea that she has any dirt on him would imply that man does or thinks about anything besides football, which he doesn’t.
Sure, he probably ignored her to look for plays from 1984 game film for weeks on end, but that’s about it. https://t.co/DgknaPh8FR

Having receipts on Bill Belicheck is crazy power to have. This lady will own a franchise before it’s all said and done if she leverages it right https://t.co/ymKEOwHelz

If nothing else, a failing or failed relationship can wind up being a distraction. We saw that Tom Brady was far from himself last season amid his relationship problems with his now-ex-wife Gisele.
Then again, Brady’s issue may have been a case of age catching up to him rather than the distraction of his off-field issues.
If the Patriots play well this year, all will be well. But if the team struggles early and often throughout the season, there may be a pretty obvious scapegoat.
